Effects of Green Tea on Antioxidative Defense System and Lipid Peroxidation in Rat Liver Exposed to Microwaves


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of green tea on the antioxidative defense system and lipid peroxidation in rat liver exposed to microwave. Sprague-Dawley male rats of 200£ç¡¾ 10 gm were randomly assigned to one normal group and microwave exposed groups were divided into two groups: microwave(MW) group and green tea(GT) group which were administrated the distilled water and green tea extracts during experimental periods, respectively, The rats in both groups(MW and GT) were irradiated with microwave at frequency of 2.45 GHz for 15 min and rats were sacrificed at 4th day after the irradiation of microwave. The activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) in both group of MW and GT group were not significantly changed to that of normal group even though the activities in both groups were apt to be increased. The activity of glutathione peroxides(GSHpx) in MW group was lower than that of the normal group, and that of GT group was restored to the normal group. The glutathione S-transferase(GST) activity in MW group was also decreased and that of GT group was recovered to the normal group. The contents of vitamin E in MW group was lower than the normal group and that of GT group was almost restored as much as the normal group. The contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) in liver of MW group were increased to 1.5 fold of normal group and that of GT group was almost recovered as normal level. It was suggested that antioxidative defense system except SOD of hepatic tissue is reduced by microwave irradiation and alleviated to the normal level by the contribution to the normalization of imbalance with the administration of green tea extract.
